Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) reiterated his warnings to Russia during his first government statement before the Bundestag in Berlin.
«If not everyone has understood it yet: Every violation of territorial integrity will come at a high price,» said Scholz on the occasion of the massive Russian troop movements on the border with Ukraine.
Russia has stationed tens of thousands of soldiers on the border with Ukraine in recent weeks. Political observers fear that the Russian army is about to invade Ukraine.
Scholz said in his government statement that he was «very concerned» about the security situation on the Russian-Ukrainian border. However, the federal government is still ready for a «constructive dialogue» with Russia.
Germany had to «try to reach an understanding more and more often, to try to break out of the escalation spiral, as has been the case with the Normandy process,» emphasized Scholz in the Bundestag.
In Brussels, on the sidelines of the summit with the countries of the so-called Eastern Partnership, Scholz will hold a tripartite meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and the Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Selenskyj.
